Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I become a NCMIR user?
- If you are interested in becoming a NCMIR user, submit an online User Application.
You will be asked to supply your contact information along with a description of your project or resource request,
your sources of funding, and a list of recently published work that is relevant to your request.
Research that would benefit from NCMIR technologies include specific biological projects for specimen preparation,
3D investigations, and enhancement of microscopic imaging modes or computational tools.

- If I work with NCMIR, do NCMIR investigators become co-authors on my publication(s)?
- If a project requires significant staff resources, one or more NCMIR members are usually listed as co-authors on
published works. For service projects, attribution of NCMIR's contribution should be provided in the acknowledgements,
but no authorship is expected.
- Are there charges for use of resources at NCMIR?
- There is no charge for using intermediate voltage electron microscopes (IVEMs) or any other instruments supported
by the P41 grant. Outside users must, however, pay a fee for confocal microscopes or any other instruments for which
NCMIR pays the cost of maintenance contracts. To obtain a list of charges for the use of specific instruments, call
(858) 534-0276.
- Who supports my travel to NCMIR?
- Visiting scientists, collaborators, and other outside users are expected to support their own travel to NCMIR.
The facility does not provide compensation to defray the cost of travel or lodging.
- What are the criteria for approval of my request for access?
- Projects are approved based on their requirement for the types of unique instrumentation or technologies
available or under development at NCMIR. All projects must have existing peer-reviewed funding, and applicants
should be prepared to supply personnel to perform the project.
For further information, refer to the User Application page .
- Is NCMIR a core facility? Can I get conventional
electron/light microscopy done for a fee?
- NCMIR is not a core facility. It is a technology
development center that makes resources available to outside users and collaborators.
Such participants are expected to supply personnel to perform their projects.
- Who owns the data taken at NCMIR? Where does the data reside?
- Principal investigators own the data produced through their NCMIR projects.
Although copies of all data produced at NCMIR are retained by NCMIR, they may
not be used without express permission from the principal investigator.
- Who do I contact if I want to use NCMIR images?
- If you would like to use NCMIR images, contact the principal investigator of the project that produced the images.
If you do not know the name of the principal investigator, contact Maria Mann at (858) 534-0276.
